Again, we come across the distinction between a generative model and a discriminative model. In the context of classification, a generative scheme creates a set of models describing how likely it is for a given feature set to be generated, given the underlying class. As an example, in spam classification, a generative model might model a spam generator by saying that it has a 50% probability of putting the word “free” in any new email it writes, whereas only a 5% probability for a non-spam generator. Then, for classifying a new point, it calculates the probability of that point being generated by each class; the label assigned to this point is then the class with the highest probability of generating that point.
